 FOR IMMEDIATE USE
 27 NOVEMBER 2000

EASTERN CAPE CELEBRATION CEREMONY ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE DISABLED PERSONS.

Eastern Cape Province will hold its celebrations to observe the International Day for Disabled persons on the 30th of November 2000 at
10H00 at Skenjana Roji hall, Bisho.MEC for Sport, Recreation, Art & Culture, Nosimo Balindlela will deliver the keynote address at the
occasion.

International Day of Disabled Persons is a special day set by the United Nations for the 3rd of December of every year and this year it
will be observed on the 30 November 2000.

The national theme for this year is DISABILITY RENAISSANCE from Poverty to Social, Political and Economic Empowerment of People with
Disabilities.For this year four specific areas have been identified to fit into this theme, which should be used as instruments to engage
current initiatives within government and the private sector:

* Education and Training
* Economic Empowerment
* Universal Access to Transport for People with Disabilities
* Sports and Cultural Empowerment

The National theme and focus areas have been suggested with a view in supporting and reinforcing the African Decade on Disability declared
by United Nations General Assembly (2000). The other objective is to raise awareness on these themes and issues and to start a process of
partnerships between government and civil society around the integration of disability issues into the mainstream of the society. This is
also a platform for disabled people to express their experiences, problems and needs around these issues. All this would serve as a basis
for programs to address these issues. The event for this year will also be used to acknowledge our Eastern Cape Paralympic team which
achieved so much in representing not only the Eastern Cape but South Africa as a whole in the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games.

Your institution is invited to witness this important occasion.
